Don’t tell me, show me. by Luis

My son Camilo

An old friend of mine once told me not to tell him what to do but rather show him how to do it. That comment resonated in my head and it resonates today as I have two very small kids. My son Camilo is 22 months and my daughter Sofia is 7 months. I never told Camilo to take my floor pump and try to pump my bicycle tires but that is exactly what he tries to do. He even knows how to hook the pump valve to the pump barrel for storage, amazing!

The reason I am telling you this is because hopefully if you become one of my blog readers you may be able to accompany me in my journey to get back in shape and compete at the Hawaii Ironman 2006. As often as possible I will be updating my blog with a summary of my training and hopefully be able to share my experiences, challenges and frustrations on the way to Alii Drive. So I will no longer be telling you what I did in the early 90’s, I will be showing you via this medium.

Yesterday I did one of my favorite rides from Fraser Colorado to the top of Berthoud pass which is at about 11900 feet, that is about a 4000 feet gain in 17 miles. I took it easy and tried to stay aerobic so I had time to think about all the things I wanted to write about. I had so many I could not wait to get home and start. The problem was, my kids were patiently waiting at home and I got so busy with them I forgot most of them. Well I still remember a few of these but I better get some sort of portable handheld device to write things down as they come to me. This ride made me sore today so I am backed off and just swam. That was hard enough since the pool is at 9000 ft elevation over at the Snow Mountain Ranch YMCA pool.

The more I get into this Blog the more I think I will enjoy it. I have written a few articles published in the tri magazines here in the US and Australia plus some articles for their web sites and for Ironmanlive. That was fine and I was grateful for the opportunity and experience. But in this forum readers can easily comment on the post and my words are not changed by editors. It is raw. Yes there is a risk. Not to mention that my writing skills will be there for scrutiny but I hope to get better and learn something in the process.

I hope you enjoy reading my Blog, and if there is something that you think was useful to you please let me know. That is one of the main reasons for doing this and it will keep me motivated to bring more and better stories to you.
