Resting Heart Rate

Today is Tuesday and I am totally exhausted for lack of sleep. I have so many things to do because we are getting ready to go to Kona, plus I am getting my next level of coaching certification this weekend and have to have everything done by this weekend. On top of that my wife Kelly is on a trip to the mountains to take care of some business and I have our two kids today. So I am writing this post between chasing Camilo around the house and propping Sofia up. She likes to sit up but falls down. She is so easy to take care of however. Camilo on the other hand it’s a ‘Boy’ with a big B. If you are a parent I am sure you know what I am saying.

Last Sunday after a good night sleep there was some cooler weather and I went for my long run. If you are one of my “extended coaching” athletes you always hear me harping about trying to get in a perfect workout. That is a workout were you are 100% aerobic. My long run (1 hour 23 minutes) was one of these and it was not just perfect but I would say perfect + because my pace was as fast as I have seen it in years and effortless. The route was out and back and I ran even splits. I had a good idea this was going to be a good run. Standing at the trail my resting pulse was in the low 40’s. Even when I got home I did not feel like I had just done my longest run. After a meal I lifted weights. Needless to say I was very happy about my day. Now I just have to do this with 20 pounds less and warmer weather. Piece of cake right? Cake???

Monday I just had time for a swim. The coach gave us a lot of kicking and that was hard after my long run and lifting. Not too bad though, I survived. What I did not like was this change of pace during the main set. It seems that all we do at masters now is a combination of long swims and hard short swims between them. I do not enjoy them that much. I can see doing them once is a while but not all the time. I like long boring swims. Some people would say 'that is nuts'. But that will be a topic for another day.

So that brings me back to today and as I mentioned I am tired but my wife will be here later in the day and hopefully I’ll have energy left to get on the trainer and perhaps do a lifting session. Hanging with the kids is kind of fun though. My wife calls it, 'bonding'. Should we call it a perfect parent day?
