The half Iron triathlon is typically 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile half marathon. Add those numbers and you get 70.3. This distance has become very popular over the last few years. It is a perfect stepping stone for triathletes that hope to one day compete in a full distance Ironman. Full recovery from a half ironman when properly trained is max 2 weeks. This quicker recovery makes it easier to do a few of these races over the racing season or perhaps as part of a build up towards a full Ironman. Top professionals finish this distance in about 4 hours but many beginners and senior citizen athletes may take 7 to 8 hours to complete one. This distance is full of challenges.
Perhaps the biggest difference in this race versus shorter distances is the added nutritional requirements to complete the event. You can be the fittest athlete at the start line and end up way back if "in race" nutrition is ignored. Our body can only carry enough energy to last for about two hours at a race pace effort. This means that every athlete will have to figure out the best way to replenish these stores and perhaps more important learn to ration the usage of these precious resources with pacing and in training developed aerobic fitness.
If your half Ironman race is in the next 12 to 22 weeks time is of the essence. You are ready to start our peak performance program. This program takes you through three phases of training (base, speed, and taper) and provides you with daily workouts including tips to help you gain the most benefit from each of these sessions. The program incorporates heart rate zones so that you will maximize your fitness gains, and also includes a four phase strength training program, tips on nutrition, mental focus guidelines, equipment checklists and more. The fee for the peak performance program is US $29.00 per week.
If your half Ironman race is in more than 22 weeks your best bet is to get started with our Maintenance Program, which is designed to help build and maintain a base of off-season fitness while still enabling you to recover perfectly to be able to slot comfortably into our peak performance program later. The fee for the maintenance program is US$19.00 per week.
